Biographical Note

Livingston Chester Lord was president of Eastern from 1898—before the school actually opened—until his death in 1933.  He presided over Eastern Illinois State Normal School (later Teachers College) from its beginning, personally hiring all of the original teachers and serving for decades as the school’s guiding light, wise steward and personal exemplar.

Born in 1851 in Killingworth, Connecticut, Lord attended a country school until the age of 14, when he was forced to quit due to the death of his father in the Civil War.  He later enrolled in a Connecticut teachers’ school, the New Britain Normal School, completing the two year course when he was 18 years old.  By today’s standards, Mr. Lord’s education was meager.  He earned no academic degrees, though he later was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Illinois, Miami University of Ohio and Harvard University.

After completing his education, Lord taught briefly in Connecticut, before moving to Minnesota, where he taught in various schools for 24 years, including a 10-year stint as president of the Minnesota State Normal School at Moorhead.  Called from that institution in 1898 to found a similar school in Charleston, Illinois, Mr. Lord served here as president until his death on May 15, 1933.  His remains and those of his wife are buried in Charleston’s Mound Cemetery.
