Checking out, borrowing, returning
If you are a resident of Illinois and at least 18 you may apply for a community borrowers card. Please go to the Community Borrowers page for more information on services available to Illinois residents.
General Stacks books may be renewed for an additional four weeks. Current print journals may be renewed once, for one additional day. Items may not be renewed if they have been requested by another patron. For more information, please view the full Circulation Policy.
You can renew items by telephone at 217-581-6071. Phone 217-581-6091 to renew media items. You may renew materials online yourself using the My Account feature of the EIU Online Catalog.
You may also renew materials using I-Share. For more information, see this tutorial.
Interlibrary loan books may sometimes be renewed by calling 217-581-6074.
To request an item, click on the "Request this item" link located directly under the information about each copy, as illustrated below. It works best to request the first or second available copy.
If you need to request journal or magazine articles, or books that are not available in the I-Share catalog, you need to complete an Interlibrary Loan request form for articles or books.

The Panther Card is required to check out materials. Library patrons are charged a monetary fine and/or replacement cost for overdue and lost library materials.
Library fines and fees are billed to EIU student accounts. For details on payment, visit EIU’s Student Accounts page: http://www.eiu.edu/busofc/bursar_payment.php
If an item designated as lost is returned, the patron is assessed the fines that have accrued to a maximum of $10 and a $15 processing fee. The minimum fee for a lost book is $50.

Restrooms are available throughout the library on the 3000 (South), 4000, and 1000 (North and South) levels of the building. Check the library map or ask at a service desk for directions.
The Martin Luther King Jr. University Union offers a 24-hour study lounge on the main floor of the east building just inside the west entrance.
Lost Panther Cards are sent to the Panther Card Office (3040 Student Services Building). The phone number is 217-581-6596.

Booth Library accepts gifts of books, journals and other materials following certain guidelines as stated in the "Gifts" section of the Library Services Collection Development policy.
Section VII, "Gifts" states:
The library welcomes gifts and donations of useful materials, or the funds to purchase them.However, all gifts of materials to the library are accepted with the understanding that they are added to the collection only after they have met the same selection criteria as materials which are purchased.
The library will not accept gifts with conditions as to their disposition or location except by expressed permission of the Dean of Library Services. Generally, the library will not maintain gift collections as separate entities. The library retains the right to dispose of unneeded gift materials, regardless of how they were acquired, by discarding or sale in the library's annual book sale. The library does not provide any statement estimating the value of donations.

Many copy machines in the library take the Panther Card. You may add cash to your Panther Card using the cash-to-chip machine in the copy room just west of the Circulation Desk.
It is the responsibility of the individual to comply with U.S. Copyright Law, posted near each machine.
Printing costs are billed to the student's EIU account by swiping the Panther Card's magnetic strip at the printing station in the lab on the 4000 Level. Printing charges will appear on the student's monthly bill from the University.
Patrons without a Panther Card can purchase a print card from the service desk on the 4000 Level for $1.00. Exact change is required. Cards provide 10 black and white prints or 5 color prints.
The Reference Computer Lab, located on the third floor (3000 Level) near the Reference Desk, is set up for research only. Printing pages from the catalog and article databases is free in the Reference Computer Lab, and there is no limit to the number of pages printed.
Wireless printing is also available. PDF files and Word files can be sent as print jobs from http://print.eiu.edu/ to Booth’s printers, located on the 4000 Level of the library. Print jobs will be deleted if not printed after 24 hours. Call Library Technology Services at 217-581-6091 for help.
There are several ways to find articles in journals.
1. To search for articles online, enter your search terms in the articles search box on the library homepage.
2. Full-text databases such as EBSCO Academic Search Complete and others contain full-text articles. Find this and all of Booth Library's other article databases from the "databases" link on the Library home page.
3. Citation databases allow you to search for articles and citation information, but generally do not provide full-text. In addition, indexes such as these sometimes allow you to search for books, book chapters, dissertations, and other information.
4. Some specialized indexes are only available in print. For help identifying and locating these indexes, ask a librarian at the Reference Desk.

The Reference Desk (217-581-6072) on the 3000 level is the place to ask for assistance in finding information you need. Reference librarians are available in person anytime the library is open. Email, chat, and individual appointments are also available.

Microfilm, microfiche and micro-cards are pre-digital forms of high-density data storage.
Microfilm is plastic film on which are printed microphotographs of the pages of a book, periodical, etc. It comes on long reels.
Microfiche is a flat piece of film containing microphotographs of the pages of a book, periodical, etc. It looks like a sheet of plastic.
Microcards are similar to microfiche except the information is printed extremely small on cardstock.
Special magnifying readers are available for viewing microfilm and microfiche in the microforms area, 1000 North. Please ask for assistance at the Reference Desk. It is possible to copy from microfilm and microfiche. The machines take Panther Cards or coins and the cost is $.10 per copy.
A multi-function microform reader, the ScanPro 1000, is also available in the microforms room. This machine is attached to a PC and allows the user to save digital images from microforms to a flash drive. Document images can also be printed on the attached laser printer for ten cents per page.
Using the collections
Off-campus access to the library's electronic resources is available to current students, faculty, and staff at Eastern Illinois University. There is no "master login" required. simply follow the link to any resource. You will be prompted to login with your EIU netid and password if it is required. You will only need to login once per browser session.

If you are having problems logging in with your NetID, there is an alternative login system using your Library ID number and last name. Your library ID number is located in the lower right corner of your Panther card. You may look up your library id number if you do not have your Panther card available.
When searching a database, look for the "Get Full Text" link. For an explanation of this service, go to the Get Full Text linking FAQ.
Alternatively, for the library's print journals, you can search the EIU Online Catalog. Go to the Advanced Search screen, enter the journal title in the search box, and check the "Journal / Magazine" box in the "Limit To" section below.
Print reserve materials are placed at the Circulation Desk which is located at the south end of the 3000 Level. CDs, videos and other non-print reserves are placed at the Library Technology Services desk on the 4000 level. These materials are searchable under the "Course Reserves" link in the EIU Online Catalog also at the "Reserves" link on the library home page, under "Services"
The library collects feature films, documentaries, performance, television, and educational films. The CDs, and DVDs are located on the 4000 level. VHS video tapes can be requested from the Circulation Desk. Search the Library Catalog for a topic or title to see what we own. The library also has streaming video. Click on the link in the catalog to access streaming video.
